Build Your Own ChatGPT

Understand what ChatGPT actually is, then build your own version and put it online with your name on it, in about an hour.

4sections13lessons

What you will learn

  • Explain in plain words what the model is really doing when it answers you
  • Know exactly why it invents statistics and fake sources, and spot it before you send the work on
  • Drop the four wrong assumptions about AI that quietly cost people money
  • See why it forgets you, and what every app does to make it look like it remembers
  • Read the hidden instruction sent before your first word, and write your own
  • Take apart any AI chat app into its three pieces, none of which is the model itself
  • Install Node, get an OpenAI key and run a working chat app on your own machine
  • Change its personality and deploy it to a public URL you can send to someone

Curriculum

  • What You Are Building, and Why It Is Easier Than You Think
  • The Worlds Best Guessing Machine
  • Why It Confidently Makes Things Up
  • What ChatGPT Is Not

Requirements

  • A computer running Windows or macOS, and no coding experience
  • An OpenAI account for the API key, which is separate from a ChatGPT subscription
  • A few dollars of API credit. Building and testing this costs pennies
  • About an hour, with the code provided for you on GitHub

About this course

Building your own ChatGPT sounds like something only engineers do. It is not, because you are not building the hard part. Nobody builds the brain. Every AI chat app in the world, including the real one, is three pieces bolted together, and two of them are yours.

The class starts with what the model actually is, in language with no jargon in it. Once you see how it produces text, everything else stops being mysterious: why it makes things up so confidently, why it forgets you between sessions, and why the whole conversation gets resent on every single message.

Then you build. Install Node, take the finished code from GitHub, add your OpenAI key and watch it answer you on your own machine. After that you rewrite the hidden instruction that gives it its personality, and push the whole thing online.

You finish with a real app on a real URL, and something better than a certificate: an accurate mental model of what these tools are. That is what stops you being sold nonsense later.

Who this course is for

  • Curious non-developers who want to understand AI properly rather than collect prompt tricks
  • Founders and managers evaluating AI tools who are tired of not knowing what is real
  • Anyone who has been caught out by a confident, completely invented answer
  • People who learn by building the thing rather than reading about it

Nothing to lose here.

This class costs nothing and needs no card. Make an account, start it now, and see whether the way I build is the way you want to build.
